Toen ik in het vijfde middelbaar zat, moest ik een presentatie doen over een nieuwe of onbekende auteur die dat jaar een boek ging uitbrengen. Na wat opzoekwerk ben ik terecht gekomen bij Alexis Henderson en haar debuutroman ‘The Year of the Witching’. Het boek intrigeerde me, maar tegen dat het uitkwam was ik vergeten dat het bestond. Bijna 2 jaar later wandel ik de Standaard Boekhandel binnen en zag ik dat boek liggen. Ik had het dan maar meteen gekocht en gelezen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Year of the Witching is een duistere fantasyroman met als hoofdthema hekserij. Het verhaal speelt zich af in Bethel, een dorp waar er strikte regels zijn rond religie. Immanuele Moore, het hoofdkarakter, wordt door het volk gezien als vervloekt door de zonden van haar moeder. Op een dag betreedt Immanuelle het donkere bos, waar ze te maken krijgt met een duistere, bovennatuurlijke kracht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De spanning in dit verhaal is meesterlijk overgebracht. Het boek biedt een mix van sociale kritiek, horror en feminisme als hoofdthema’s. Immanuelle is daarbij een krachtig hoofdpersonage. Ze heeft een sterke persoonlijkheid, maar worstelt met haar identiteit en dat maakt haar herkenbaar voor de lezers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Het verhaal is niet fast-paced. Dit is voornamelijk om de spanning en sfeer erin te houden. Het voelt dus met momenten een beetje langdradig, maar toch wil je verder lezen. Het is een revolutionaire roman en aan te raden voor gothic horror fans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
